Expanded perlite is a white granular material with a honeycomb-like internal structure, produced by preheating perlite ore sand followed by instantaneous high-temperature calcination and expansion.

  • Expanded perlite is a white granular material with a honeycomb internal structure, produced by preheating and instantaneous high-temperature calcination of perlite ore sand.

The principle is as follows: perlite ore is crushed into ore sand of a specific particle size. Upon rapid heating (above 1000°C), moisture within the ore sand vaporises and expands within the softened ore particles, forming a porous structure. The volume expands to 10-30 times its original size. Expanded perlite is categorised into three forms based on expansion conditions and application: open-cell, closed-cell, and balloon-cell.

Closed-cell perlite for construction

Closed-cell perlite is a novel expanded perlite product characterised by high strength, lightweight properties, thermal insulation, excellent electrical insulation, high purity, uniform particle size, and low water absorption.

  • Closed-cell perlite is a novel expanded perlite product characterised by high strength, lightweight properties, thermal insulation, excellent electrical insulation, high purity, uniform particle size, and low water absorption. This product is manufactured by heating perlite mineral sand of specific particle size using electrical energy. The expanded particles undergo instantaneous high-temperature melting on their surfaces, overcoming interstitial surface tension to freely close. Upon cooling, this forms a continuous vitrified surface layer while preserving an intact porous hollow structure internally. The unique production method ensures the product retains the purity of perlite's natural inorganic chemical composition. Its excellent lightness, strength, and electrical insulation properties determine its wide range of applications.

  • Visually appearing as slightly rounded granules, it possesses a continuous vitrified, smooth outer surface with a reflective sheen. Exhibiting pronounced capillary adsorption and compressive strength, it demonstrates high compatibility with materials such as clay and cement in a wet slurry state, i.e., excellent workability.

  • It can be used as an aggregate substitute for river sand in formulating internal and external wall insulation mortars, producing high-grade insulating decorative panels, as the primary material for composite insulation coatings, a key component in filter aids, refractory bricks, and enamel materials. It also serves as a primary ingredient in high-grade insulation materials and lightweight fillers for construction, metallurgy, industrial furnace electrical insulation, and thermal pipelines.

Flow velocity test

We conducted flow rate and filter cake formation tests on the perlite filter aid using a vacuum filtration apparatus.

Using clean water as the test medium, the filtration flow rate at standard thickness was 0.93 mL/s (approximately 56 mL/min), forming a filter cake with uniform structure and well-distributed pores.

Test results demonstrate the product's excellent permeability and shape retention, making it suitable for widespread application in beverage, pharmaceutical, and chemical liquid filtration.

Moreover, we can create three tiers: fast, medium, and slow.
